Rising from the heart of Thar Desert like a golden mirage is the city of Jaisalmer. It is situated on the north west border of the country. The whole city is punctuated with beautiful palaces, forts; temples etc in yellow sand stone thus honors the city to be called the yellow city. The setting sun in Jaisalmer is in itself a feast to your eyes when the whole city turns in to a beautiful golden brown color and at this time it seems that Jaisalmer doesn't belong to this world .It was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal a bhatti Rajput king and named after him. The Bhatti Rajputs of Jaisalmer were feudal chiefs who lived of the forced levy on the caravans laden with precious silks and spices that crossed the territory enroute Delhi or Sindh. These caravans earned the town great wealth. For a long time this city enjoyed this opportunity but it had to come to an end one-day .The introduction of the shipping trade and the port of Bombay brought its golden days to an end. Rawal Jaisal built a massive fort in 1156 and people still continue to live in these ancient buildings dating from 12th to 15th century. Every House has exquisite carvings and filigreed work all over. Having so many forts, palaces, temples, ancient mansions Jaisalmer is rightly called the museum city .The entire city lies inside a city wall of 5 kms lengths and is hence also called the walled city.
