The guru teaches his disciple, he is always there to help him.He is just like his shadow whenever he needs him in a problem, but he will never fight his war he has to fight for his own war.
In the Mahabharat Bhishma says that "The guru is greater even than one's father or mother".There is a very good saying in the gurus praise. That the Guru and the God both are standing together and the disciple has to touch both's feet but he is confused that whose feet should he touch first, finally he decides that it was the guru only who showed me the way to God hence it is guru's feet first. Guru is regarded as equal in values of the trinity the three Gods Brahma the creator Vishnu the protector and Maheshvara(Shiva) the destroyer. In fact the first verse in the many prayers begin with:
GURU IS BRAHMAN,GURU IS VISHNU,GURU IS THE GOD MAHESVARA GURU IS TRULY THE GREAT ABSOLUTE.OUR PROSTRATION UNTO HIM.
