The word Kundalini means, "coil". This is the traditional belief but it is incorrectly understood it actually comes from the word kunda, which means a deeper place, pit or cavity. That means kundalini shakti (coiled energy) which is coiled three and half time is located in the coiled form and in a dormant form at the base of the spine in sushumna nadi which is the home of mooladhara chakra also. Sushumna nadi is the most important psychic passageway. Mooladhar chakra is presented in perineum region i.e., the space between below scrotum to anus in male and cervix of vagina to anus in female. Kundalini represents the feminine shakti (energy), which always tries to unite with her consort, Shiva (the cosmic consciousness) in (Sahasrara chakra) situated in brain. Thus crossing all the other six charkas. It dwells in every human being but in dormant form. When the kundalni shakti awakes it passes through sushumna nadi.. `
According to the tantra there are almost 72000 nadis through which the stimuli flows like an electric current from one point to another in the whole body. Out of these 72000 nadis there are ten main channels and out of these ten, three are most important these Three nadis are called IDA, PINGALA & SUSHUMNA .Ida controls all the mental processes and is known as the moon and the female energy and passes through the left nostrils, Pingala the vital processes and known as the sun and the male energy and passes through the right nostrils. Pingla is related to sympathetic nervous system Ida is related to Parasympathetic nervous system. In the brain pingala cross from right to left brain hemisphere and ida from left to right brain hemisphere the third sushumna nadi is the channel for the awakening of spiritual consciousness. You may consider these three nadis as pranic force, mental force and spiritual force. Which are roughly translated as mind, body and spirit. The third flow is the result of the balanced interaction of the first two. As sushumna flows inside the central canal of the spinal cord, ida & pingala simultaneously flow on the outer surface of the spinal cord, still within the bony vertebral column. Ida, pingala and sushumna nadis begin in mooldhara in the pelvic floor. From there sushumna flows directly upward within the central canal while ida passes to the left and pingala to the right .At swadhisthana chakra or the sacral plexus the three nadis come together again and Ida and pingala crisscross one another. Ida passes up to the right, pingala to the left, and sushumna continues to flow directly upwards in the central canal. The three nadis come together again at manipura chakra, the solar plexus, and so on, and finally ida, pingala and sushumana meet in the anjna chakra. When there is a continious energy flows in ida, pingala and sushumna at the same time they get union at ajna chakra. Then the process of enlightenment of transformation takes place. This is a simple and easy way to understand the awakening of kundalini.
With the awakening of kundalini, a transformation takes place in life, it has little to do with one's moral, religious or ethical life .It has more to do with the quality of our experience and perception. When kundalini wakes up, your mind changes and your priorities and attachment also change.
The word Kundalini refers to the shakti or power when it is in its dormant potential state, but when it is manifesting, you can call it Devi, Kali, durga…etc. The uncontrolled energy is called kali.It is when kundalini awakes in moladhara and swadhisthan chakra.and when it rises from these two charkas to the upper charkas then kali becomes durga.(Kali & Durga are the two of nine manifestations of the Goddess Paravati ,the consort of Lord Shiva)
There are different methods to awaken kundalini.
A Hatha Yogi may do it by Pranayama(breath control), Asana, Mudras…etc. on the self(leaving body consciousness)
A Bhakti yogi by Shraddha(faith) and devotion or by self-surrender(Samarpana)
A RajaYogi by meditation on "self"
A Tantrik by sex sublimation and Siddha Mantra
And sometimes awakened by the grace of Guru(Master) who can candle the fire
When Kundalini Shakti moves up in higher lotuses, a Yogi gets Siddhis(Super natural powers). When it touches Sahashrara Chakra, a Yogi gets Samadhi and enlightenment, the experience, the ocean of bliss, the state is beyond words, thought, time and space, means indescribable in words.
When Kundalini awaken it travels from Mooldhar Chakra to above, touching through Swadhisthana, Manipura, Anahat, Vishuddhi, Ajna and lastly it joins the Shahashrara, while the Kundalini ascends to higher chakras, it gains the powers of various chakras.
